Single Reviews: Afterglow

As December Falls – Afterglow

Label: ADF Records

Release date: November 27, 2020

For those of you who don’t know As December Falls are a Pop/Punk band from Nottingham in the UK. This newest single ‘Afterglow’ is from their much-anticipated sophomore album ‘Happiness’.

This song goes against the more modern route that many Pop/Punk artists are going down, so rather than including more electronic sounds they have gone back to the thrashing guitar and more positive energy from earlier acts of the genre. They appear almost reminiscent of the early Tonight Alive and the Story So Far because of the high intensity in their performance. There are also hints of Paramore due mainly to the attitude and vocal power of lead singer Bethany Hunter who’s voice commands the whole song.

Despite the similarities to other acts they do have an originality to their performance and give the sound their own personality. We open with the sound of drums with guitar building in the background that quickly evolves into a neat little guitar solo to lead us into the verse. Then the powerful vocals come in with the guitar taking more of a back seat during the verse but then the guitar builds back up and then explodes into the chorus to complement the gut busting vocal performance. The song continues in this vain through most of its entirety expect for the bridge which has a cool little riff behind the vocals.

The band have gone down a heavier route to similar artists in the genre at this current time. They seem to be going for that more old school Pop/Punk vibe but modernizing it and giving it their own little spin. This is in my opinion a great song and I have listened to it many times not just for the purpose of this review. I may be being too generous as this is one of my favorite musical genres but I feel this song deserves 4 stars.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
