Single Reviews: Midsommar

Feverjaw – Midsommar

Label: SWND Records

Release Date: March 11, 2022

Feverjaw are a rock band with asound marked by driving guitars, anthemic choruses and undeniable hooks who have been slowly building their name over the last year as a band to keep an eye out for. Following on from their debut album ‘All Bets Are Off’ the band’s latest track Midsommar is taken from their upcoming EP ‘Casual Abrasive’, which is set for release on April 1, 2022.

Featured on the new single are guest vocals from Ben Fox Smith (Serafin / Stoney Sleep) and mastered at the iconic Abbey Road Studios by Frank Arkwright (Arcade Fire, Frank Turner, System of a Down). This is a high octane track that sees the band delve into grittier territory both lyrically and musically with a focus on powerful guitar surges accompanied by a thunderous bass. ‘Midsommar’ is an anthemic raw guitar-driven track about the dangers of toxic love.

Opening to a guitar playing some simple chords the song slowly builds incorporating the drums and blending in the other elements. The vocals are tinged with anger sadness and pain as we hear the words “if this is real love, I won’t feel pure hate” ring out. Unfortunately, there are certain sections where the vocals don’t stand out as much in the mix, especially in the verse which at points feels a little too quiet. Though we really get to feel that emotion in the vocals much more clearly when the chorus hits.

The band also greatly utilizes melodic harmonies whilst pushing their sound towards a darker tone that is emboldened by the distorted chords and tight arrangement. In the lyrics there is the previously mentioned theme of toxic love as the words above suggest it is a dangerous love, one that leads to anger and regret and questioning of the authenticity of said love.

There is some powerful feelings present here accompanied by a great use of vocal harmony, powerful guitars and a thumping bass. Though there where some issues with the mix that didn’t fall as kindly on my ears this was a lyrically strong release and shows the band’s shift into a darker territory with a more gritty edge. Check out the single on all platforms and keep a lookout for their upcoming EP.
