Single Reviews: The Morning

Mikey Ball and the Company – The Morning

Label: unsigned

Release Date: July 15, 2022

Bournemouth-based hard rock band Mikey Ball & The Company recently released “The Morning” the lead single from their upcoming new album ‘Through The Night’ set for release in October. The band have been playing together for the last 4 years, drawing influence from the likes of Bruce Springsteen and more recent rock bands such as Deaf Havana. They bring a unique sound and just feel like a great rock and roll band.

“The Morning” tackles issues surrounding a hidden relationship and how that affected and pulled at the composure of the characters included. The track was written during the last of the lockdowns and took shape quickly already embedding itself well into every show the band have performed since live music returned.

There is a hum of amp feedback and that fuzz and crackle as the lead connects with the metal of the input jack then a melodic guitar opens the track and the drums come thundering in. The bass thuds in the background while the rhythm guitar rings out the chord progression behind the melody. The track really captures the youthful energy of infatuation as it surges from restrained verses to a powerful full-on chorus. Some fun riffs also appear in the bridge section as the track twists in a different direction and an awesome bit of lead guitar gradually brings the song to its conclusion.

At first, I wasn’t quite sure whether I liked the vocals which have this gruff quality to them. However, my opinion quickly swayed towards the positive when the chorus hit and things get a little heavier and the drums start thrashing the vocals really spring to life as vocalist Mikey Ball roars the words “It’s coming in from the cold when I get back home” joined by some great harmonies.

“The Morning” really shows the band developing a new direction in sound. Mikey and Chris’s guitars both capture our attention, while the rhythms bring the song together. Mikey’s vocals roar throughout combining with some impressive harmonies to create an infectious tune. I give this 4 and a half stars, it’s a great track to tide us over, until we can get our hands on the album “Through The Night’ in October. Be sure to check out the band at Canvas in Bournemouth as they have arranged a special album launch show on 7th October with special guests Myriad. You can get tickets for the show here.
